Impacting generational change by pairing youth facing the greatest obstacles with a paid, professional mentor.
About Friends of the Children
Friends of the Children was founded in 1993 in Portland, Oregon and is now a national network with 37 locations across the country. The organization pairs children in foster care or high-poverty schools with a professional mentor called a Friend, providing long-term, relationship-based support from kindergarten through high school graduation. Research shows that this model helps children break the cycle of generational poverty and supports long-term success in education, employment, and life outcomes. Third-party evaluation of program graduates shows that: • 83% graduate with a high school diploma or GED; • 93% remain free from juvenile justice system involvement; • 98% wait until after their teen years to become parents; and • 92% go on to enroll in post-secondary education, serve in the military, or enter the workforce.
Mission and direction
Friends of the Children, founded in 1993, is a national network dedicated to breaking the cycle of generational poverty by providing long-term, salaried, professional mentors to children in foster care or high-poverty schools. We support each child from kindergarten through high school graduation, ensuring they graduate, remain free from the criminal justice system, delay parenting, and pursue post-secondary opportunities.
